This Privacy Policy explains how WITHIN, offered by Shahem Mclaurin LCSW, PLLC, handles information when you use the WITHIN mobile application.
Information Stored on Your Device
WITHIN is designed around local storage.
Journal entries, voice recordings you choose to keep, transcripts, remembered notes, profile preferences, app settings, and related reflection data are stored locally on your device.
Core reflection content is not uploaded by WITHIN to a separate WITHIN account or cloud database.
Voice Reflections and Transcription
If you use voice reflection features, WITHIN requests access to your microphone so you can record audio.
When you choose to create a transcript, WITHIN uses Apple’s on-device speech recognition where supported. WITHIN requires on-device recognition for this feature, and recorded audio is not intentionally sent to WITHIN servers for transcription.
You may choose to save audio and transcript, transcript only, or audio only.
If you choose transcript-only storage, the associated audio recording is removed from WITHIN’s local app storage.
Permissions
WITHIN may request access to certain device features only when needed for features you choose to use.
These may include:
Microphone access for voice reflections
Speech Recognition access for creating transcripts
Notification permission for Gentle Reminders and other optional reminders
Photo access when you choose a profile image
Device authentication, such as Face ID or device passcode, when you enable App Lock
These permissions are optional. You can change them at any time through your iOS Settings.
Journal and Reflection Data
Your journal entries and other reflection content are intended to remain private to your device unless you choose to export or share them.
WITHIN does not use your journal entries, voice reflections, or transcripts for advertising.
WITHIN does not sell your journal entries, voice recordings, transcripts, or other private reflection content.
WITHIN Deep Purchases
WITHIN may offer paid features through a subscription called WITHIN Deep.
Subscriptions are purchased and managed through Apple using StoreKit.
Apple processes payment and billing information. WITHIN does not receive your full credit card or payment-card information.
WITHIN may receive information from Apple necessary to determine whether a subscription or paid feature is active.
Apple’s handling of purchase information is governed by Apple’s own privacy policies and terms.
Notifications
If you enable notifications, WITHIN may send optional reminders such as journaling prompts, grounding reminders, feeling check-ins, or notices related to features you have chosen to use.
You may disable notifications at any time through your device settings.
App Lock and Device Authentication
If you enable App Lock, WITHIN may use Apple-provided device authentication technologies such as Face ID, Touch ID where available, or your device passcode.
WITHIN does not receive or store your biometric information. Biometric authentication is handled by Apple and your device.
Exporting and Sharing Your Information
WITHIN allows you to export certain reflection information, including through PDF export.
If you choose to export, AirDrop, email, save, or otherwise share information from WITHIN, that information is sent only to the destination you select.
Once information leaves WITHIN, it may be subject to the privacy and security practices of the service, application, device, or person you choose to share it with.
Problem Reports and Support
If you use the Report a Problem feature, WITHIN may help you prepare information needed to contact support.
Your private journal entries, voice recordings, and reflection content are not automatically included in problem reports.
You control what information you choose to include in a support message.
Deleting Your Information
You can delete journal entries from within WITHIN.
When you delete a saved voice entry, WITHIN also removes the audio file associated with that entry from the app’s local storage.
Because WITHIN’s core reflection data is stored locally, deleting the app may also remove locally stored WITHIN data unless you have separately exported or backed up that information through a feature or service you control.
Third-Party Services
WITHIN relies on certain Apple technologies and services to provide app functionality, including technologies such as StoreKit, Speech Recognition, Local Notifications, device authentication, and standard iOS sharing and export tools.
Your use of Apple services is also subject to Apple’s privacy policies and terms.
WITHIN may also contain links to external resources or websites. Once you leave WITHIN, those third-party services are responsible for their own privacy practices.
Children’s Privacy
WITHIN is not intended to knowingly collect personal information from children in violation of applicable law.
If you believe information relating to a child has been handled improperly through WITHIN, please contact us.
Data Security
WITHIN is designed to minimize external storage of private reflection content by keeping core journal and voice data locally on the user’s device.
No method of digital storage or transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure, so users should also protect their device with appropriate security settings.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy may be updated as WITHIN changes or as legal, technical, or operational requirements evolve.
If material changes are made, the effective date at the top of this policy will be updated and notice may also be provided within the app or through another reasonable method.
